1973 - 02/03 - February 3rd - POLARIS (Groningen)- IMO5280887 - Cargo - 353GRT - 43.6 x 7.5 - 1954 Scheeps Worst & Dutmer, Meppel, No.110 - Mrs G Boersma-Tulp - Badly holed in a collision with a tanker about 40 miles off Yarmouth in thick fog. The Oil Rig Supply Vessels TITAN SRVICE and SIGNAL SERVICE were quickly on the scene and the stricken coaster was brought towards Yarmouth lashed to the side of the TITAN SERVICE. However, the Harbourmaster refused to allow the vessel to enter the port in case she sank and blocked the river so her rescuers towed up the coast towards South Denes Caravan Park and there beached her about 100 yards offshore. Three days later, she rolled onto her starboard side and defied all attempts to salvage or scrap her until the new outer dock was built in 2007, when her remains were blown up. Seen here in April 1974 after she had been partially dismantled.
