Class 144 009 - 23 units built by BREL, Derby Works, in 1986/7, the first 13 as 2-car and the last 10 as 3-car sets - all in service with WYPTE on services around Leeds and Sheffield - all withdrawn in late 2020 - 16 preserved, this one at East Lancs Railway - seen here at Althorp on a Scunthorpe train.

  • Class 125 - 20 3-car DMU's built from 1958 by Derby works with hydraulic transmission for Lea Valley services - all withdrawn in 1977 - seen here being stripped for parts at Sunderland in 04/79.
  • Class 126 - 51012 - 22 3-car sets were built for Ayrshire services by Swindon Works in 1957, basically similar to Class 120 but with one end fitted with corridor connections - all were withdrawn by 1983.
  • Class 126 - Swindon 3-car Inter City DMU, 22 sets built in 1957 by Swindon Works for the Scottish Region Ayrshire services - full width cab at one end, corridor connection at the other to allow coupling into 6-car sets - all withdrawn 1983 - seen here at Edinburgh Waverley.
  • Class 127 - 51638 - 30 4-car sets built in 1959 by Derby Works for suburban services between Bedford and St Pancras. They were unusual in having hydraulic transmission, which limited their use elsewhere. All had been withdrawn by 1983 following electrification to Bedford although a few remained on the Gospel Oak - Barking servcies until 1984. Many of the trailer were cars were used elsewhere, particularly in Class 116 sets.
  • Class 128 - 55995 - 10 single car parcels units built in 1959 by Gloucester Carriage & WAgon Co. (6 non-gangwayed for Western Region, 4 gangwayed for Midland Region) - all withdrawn by 1990 - seen here attached to a Chester - Shrewsbury train at Chester in June 1981.
  • Class 141 - 20 x 2-car units built 1984 for local services in the Leeds area of Yorkshire, first of the 'Pacer' family of units and much unloved, being rough-riding, noisy and generally uncomfortable. On withdrawal in 1997, 15 units were sold to Iran Railways (may Allah have mercy on them!) whilst the remainder are preserved in Britain.
  • Class 141 - 141 004 - 20 x 2-car units built 1984 for local services in the Leeds area of Yorkshire, first of the 'Pacer' family of units and much unloved, being rough-riding, noisy and generally uncomfortable. On withdrawal in 1997, 15 units were sold to Iran Railways (may Allah have mercy on them!) whilst the remainder are preserved in Britain - seen here at York in WYPTE livery in March 1984.

  • Class 150/0 - 150 002 - Prototype Class 150 'Sprinter' - In 1984, BREL built two prototype, three-car, Class 150/0 units, numbered 150001 and 150002. 150 001 was fitted with Cummins engines and Voith hydraulic transmission, and 150 002 was fitted with Perkins (Rolls-Royce) engines and a fully automatic gearbox. 150 002 proved to be the worse of the two for reliability and was consequently chosen for use as the testbed for the Class 158, being re-geared to a maximum speed of 90 mph (140 km/h) and fitted with Cummins engines and Voith transmission, and with a Class 158 interior. To distinguish this unit, it was reclassified as the Class 154. It has since been returned to the standard configuration and reverted to its original number. Both prototypes were still in service with London Midland until 2011. 150001 entered service with First Great Western in January 2012, with 150002 to follow after refurbishment and re-livery. 150001 & 150002 now operate for Great Western Railway, with 150001 based at Bristol's St. Phillips Marsh Depot, primarily working the Bristol Parkway-Weston Super Mare route and 150002 based at Exeter St. Davids Depot, mainly operating the Riviera Line alongside Class 143 Pacers - seen here on display at York in September 1984.
  • Class 153 352 - 42 Class 155 2-car units built 1987/8 by Leland Bus Co. - 1991/2 all but 7 WYPTE units converted to Class 153 single car units - operated by TfW, EMR and Northern at present but slowly being withdrawn due to non-PRM compliancy - 5 (305/370/373/377/380) converted for ScotRail for use on West Highland Line with reduced seating capacity and extra space for cycles and luggage - seen here at Middlesbrough in April 1989.
