Class 142 065 - 96 2-car units built between 1985 and 1987 by BREL to replace aging First Generation DMU's - spartan accommodation and rough riding but popular with operators as they were cheap to run - all withdrawn by 2021 but to being non-PRM compliant - at least 26 units preserved - seen here at Middlesbrough in Northern Spirit livery passing 56100 in October 1999.
