CARLISLE UPPERBY LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (12A/12B) - The London and North Western Railway opened this depot in 1875 and it consisted of a brick-built eleven track shed with 4 through tracks, later rebuilt as a roundhouse, on the east side of the main Penrith line, south of Carlisle Station. In March 1959, it had an allocation of 103 engines of all types, ranging from 8 'Coronation' Class Pacific's down through 62 4-6-0's to one MR Class 2F 0-6-0. Upperby closed to steam in December 1966, but continued to service steam engines until the end of 1967. Seen here in September 1967 is Stanier Class 2MT No.46522, a 10A Carnforth engine, already withdrawn and dumped here.
