Photographs in this gallery are of locomotive depots, both steam and diesel, locomotive works, stabling points and withdrawn locomotives but not those being scrapped. Some of these pictures were taken by me, some passed on by friends and others have been bought and are part of my collection. These pictures are published for pleasure/information/research purposes only and are not for sale or copy under any circumstances. LEEDS COPLEY HILL LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (37B/56C) - The depot was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1900 in the triangle formed by the Leeds Central, Armley Moor and Ardsley lines. It was a brick 5-road through shed and in March 1959 had an allocation of 33 engines, mostly goods engines or small tank engines for shunting and local passenger duties. However, it could also lay claim to 2 Class v2 2-6-2's, 9 Class B1 4-6-0's and 10 Class A1 Pacific's. In addition, being the main maintenance point for locos from expresses to Leeds, it often more exotic engines as well. The depot closed to steam in September 1964. Seen here in 1964 almost deserted, maybe even closed.

LEEDS COPLEY HILL LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (37B/56C) - The depot was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1900 in the triangle formed by the Leeds Central, Armley Moor and Ardsley lines. It was a brick 5-road through shed and in March 1959 had an allocation of 33 engines, mostly goods engines or small tank engines for shunting and local passenger duties. However, it could also lay claim to 2 Class v2 2-6-2's, 9 Class B1 4-6-0's and 10 Class A1 Pacific's. In addition, being the main maintenance point for locos from expresses to Leeds, it often more exotic engines as well. The depot closed to steam in September 1964. Seen here in 1964 almost deserted, maybe even closed.

  • KIPPS LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (65E) - This shed was located to the north side of the Kipps branch ajust north of the town of Coatbridge. It was a double ended three road shed approached from both east and west and had a modern coaling tower. It was built by the North British Railway in 1860 and closed to steam in January 1963, diesels then taking over the depot. In 1959, the allocation was 51 engines, mainly shunting tanks and small goods engines but a few larger tanks for local passenger services. In this shot from 1958, we see a Class 08 diesel shunter flanked by Class J83 0-6-0T No.68444 and Class J36 0-6-0 No.65214.
  • KIPPS LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (65E) - This shed was located to the north side of the Kipps branch of the Monkland and Kirkintilloch Railway just east of Greenside Junction. It was a double ended, three road shed approach from both east and west. There was a modern coal bunker at the east end of the site, close to the water tank. The turntable was to the west. The shed was built in 1890 by the North British Railway and was a subshed of Glasgow Eastfield (65A). The shed officially closed in January 1963 but remained open for diesel locos and few steam locos were still stabled there. It allocation of engines in March 1959 was 51, mostly goods engines and shunting tanks plus a few tank engines for local passenger services. It was notable for being one of the homes of the diminutive Class Y9 0-0ST's such as 68114 seen here. What appears to be a coal wagon coupled behind it is in fact it's tender, as the class had only a very little coal storage space on board.
  • KIRKBY STEPHEN LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (51H/12E/12D) - This depot was built by the North Eaqstern Railway in 1865 and was made up of two 2-road dead-end sheds on the north side of Kirkby Stephen East Station. In March 1959, it had an allocation of 11 engines, all of them 2-6-0's and 10 of them of BR origin. The depot closed in November 1961. Seen here in June 1935 with Worsdell NER Class J21 0-6-0 No.810 on shed. This engine was withdrawn from South Blyth in April 1948 as LNER No.5069.

Seen here in November 1955, the depot is packed with Ivatt Class 4MT 2-6-0's, 7 of which had been transferred here in that year but their reign was shortlived, BR Standard types being preferred. Seen here in 1939 with some very dirty and unidentified NER 0-6-0's on shed.

Seen here in November 1955, the depot is packed with Ivatt Class 4MT 2-6-0's, 7 of which had been transferred here in that year but their reign was shortlived, BR Standard types being preferred. Seen here in June 1935 with Class G5 0-4-4T No.1916 and Class J21 0-6-0 No810 on the left.

In March 1959, it had an allocation of 11 engines, all of them 2-6-0's and 10 of them of BR origin. The depot closed in November 1961. Seen here in November 1955, the depot is packed with Ivatt Class 4MT 2-6-0's, 7 of which had been transferred here in that year but their reign was shortlived, BR Standard types being preferred. The only one facing the camera is No.43038, which was withdrawn in May 1964 from 55B Stourton.
  • KITTYBREWSTER (61A) - I'm not 100% sure of this but I think it must be. Taken in about 1960 because these are Class 21 locos with no yellow ends and they all look new. Class 20 on the right and some of the numerous small shunters from that era.
  • KNOTTINGLEY TMD (55G/KY) - The depot here is a relative newcomer to the railway and opened in 1967 to maintain the locomotives and hopper wagons for a planned 75 merry-go-round trains a day, expected to use the Wakefield and Goole line. In 1980, the depot received Class 56's, which were to become a staple locomotive on coal traffic in the area until the Class 66 locomotives appeared in 1998. In 2016, the depot's allocation consisted of DB Cargo UK Class 60 and 66 locomotives. Of the three power stations the depot was built to serve, Ferrybridge was closed in March 2016, while Eggborough was officially decommissioned in February 2018. However, the depot remained busy with gypsum and biomass traffic, particularly for the remaining Power Station at Drax, with workings from the Humber ports at Hull and Immingham. The depot was closed in March 2020 after the decline in railway hauled power station traffic. In early 2021, the office complex at the depot, which was built in the 1990,s, in the left side of this view, was demolished. Seen here in August 1992 with 56030 in the shed, 56075 to the right, 56076, 56098 and 56120 all in a row.

It opened in 1967 to maintain the locomotives and hopper wagons for a planned 75 Merry-go-round trains a day, expected to use the Wakefield and Goole line. In 1976, Class 03, 04, 08 shunters and Class 47 locomotives could be seen at the depot. During the late 1970's, 1980's and 1990's the depot was home to Class 56 and from the mid eighties, Class 58 locomotives. In 1980, the depot received Class 56's, which were to become a staple locomotive on coal traffic in the area until the Class 66 locomotives appeared in 1998. In 2016, the depot's allocation consisted of DB Cargo UK Class 60 and 66 locomotives. Of the three power stations the depot was built to serve, Ferrybridge was closed in March 2016, while Eggborough was officially decommissioned in February 2018. However, the depot remained busy with gypsum and biomass traffic, particularly for the remaining Power Station at Drax, with workings from the Humber ports at Hull and Immingham. The depot was closed in March 2020 after the decline in railway hauled power station traffic. In early 2021, the office complex at the depot, which was built in the 1990's, was demolished. The sidings were being used at the same time by Riviera Trains to refit Mark 1 and Mark 2 railway coaches. It was certainly one of the most difficult depots to get round in the country - I think I managed it once! Here it is seen on August 23rd, 1999, with 60068 CHARLES DARWIN parked outside and 66073 and 66120 in the doorways.

  • LANCASTER GREEN AYRE LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (23C/11E/24J/10J) - The Midland Railway built this depot in 1866, a brick-built four road dead-end shed to be found east of the line, south of Lancaster Green Ayre Station. In March 1959, the allocation of 35 engines was very varied - 3 Class 4P 2-6-4T's, 2 Class 2P 0-4-4T's, 15 Class 2MT/4MT/5MT 2-6-0's, 8 shunting tanks to mention just a few. The depot closed in April 1966. Seen here in August 1902 is Kirtley MR Class 480 0-6-0 No.595, built in 1867, renumbered to No.2513 in 1907 and finally withdrawn in 1926 by the LMS.
  • LANGWITH JUNCTION LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (40E/41J) - Buried deep with heart of the Nottinghamshire coalfield between Mansfield and Worksop, you wouldn't find many Pacifics based here! In April 1959, the allocation was 71 engines, of which only 2 were for passenger work! Coal trains were the depot's daily bread and the allocation reflected this. The depot closed in February 1966, diesel servicing having already been transferred to a new depot at nearby Shirebrook. Here in June 1958 we see Class O2 No.63986 of Retford Thrumpton Depot with what may be a Class K3 behind it.
  • LANGWITH JUNCTION LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (40E/41J) - Buried deep with heart of the Nottinghamshire coalfield between Mansfield and Worksop, you wouldn't find many Pacifics based here! In April 1959, the allocation was 71 engines, of which only 2 were for passenger work! Coal trains were the depot's daily bread and the allocation reflected this. The depot closed in February 1966, diesel servicing having already been transferred to a new depot at nearby Shirebrook. Seen here in the 1950's packed with goods engines, Class K1 2-6-0 No.62055, centre, and Class J11 0-6-0 No.64297, left, and an awful lot of other ex-GCR engines, mainly Class O1's. Note the WH Davis wagons shops beyond the buffer stops.

  • LEEDS HOLBECK LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT (20A/55A/HO) - Leeds supported a number of depots in the steam era and Holbeck was the Midland Railway's contribution. Opened in 1868, it consisted of two brick-built roundhouses and it hung on right till the end of steam operations, one of the last to close in October 1967. In January 1957, along with other depots in South Yorkshire, it was transferred from the Midland Region to the Eastern but this made very little difference to the loco allocation, consisting of 81 engines in March 1959, most of them LMS types of passenger or mixed traffic locos. By 1966, when this picture was taken, things had deteriorated somewhat, diesels having taken over much of the work, but Ivatt Class 4MT 2-6-0 No.43130 is still in traffic as is 'Jubilee' Class 4-6-0 No.45697 ACHILLES beyond her.
