WISBECH EAST - 1967 - The station was opened in March 1848 by the Eastern Counties Railway as Wisbeach, changed to Wisbech in May 1877, then again to Wisbech East in September 1948 to differentiate from the M&GN station on the other side of town. The site was very cramped and there was no room for a goods yard which was about half a mile away on a spur line of its own. There were three platforms, the outer face of the island platform being much lower for use by the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway trains, which ceased to operate passenger services in 1927. The entire tramway closed in 1966 and March - Magdalen Road line in September 1968, only the section to the goods yard remaining open into the 21st Century. Seen here is Class D16 4-4-0 No.62567 of Cambridge MPD (31A) on a March train in April 1954.

  • WISBECH - 1940's - A map from a 1947 guide book to Wisbech. The hatched areas are set aside for industrial development. The railways have been drawn over to show them better. As can be seen, both the M&GN and GER stations were badly situated to serve what was then a very busy port. Wisbech North (A) was the wrong side of the river and Wisbech East (D) was the wrong side of town. This led to the building of an extensive and tangled network of harbour lines which threaded right through the town. The M&GN harbour branch (C) ran from the goods yard (B), along the west bank of the river to West Quay and into the Old Market, ending up almost back at the station. The GER harbour lines (F) ran from just east of the passenger station (D), through the residential areas and the park to the gasworks (G) and the extensive timber yards (H) on the east bank of the river. The GER goods station (E) was entirely separate and about half a mile from the passenger station. It was the extensive goods station that remained open until 2001. The Wisbech & Upwell Tramway junction (J) was just west of the harbour junction on the south side of the line to Kings Lynn.
  • WISBECH EAST - 1920's - Seen here some time in the 1920's I think, looking from the east. The platform on the left is of reduced height for use by the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway trains, several of those locos are visible in the loco depot on the extreme left. This site is now occupied by sheltered accomadation and nothing of this station remains.

Seen here to good effect is the lower platform face as a tramway passenger train is about to depart. I think every member of staff must have managed to get in the picture!
  • WISBECH EAST - 1950 - The station was opened in March 1848 by the Eastern Counties Railway as Wisbeach, changed to Wisbech in May 1877, then again to Wisbech East in September 1948 to differentiate from the M&GN station on the other side of town. Looking west in August 1950 with a goods train bound for March. Note that the low platform face was never built up. On the extreme left, the locoshed for the tramway engines can be seen with one in the doorway.
  • WISBECH EAST - 1950's - Seen here at some point in 1950's, looking east. The driver of Class D16 No.61514 is about to hand over single line token before proceeding towards March. The line was double track but operated as a single line, the other being used for wagon storage. The platform on the right is of reduced height for use by Wisbech & Upwell Tramway trains, although passenger services were long gone by the time this picture was taken. Nothing now remains of this station.
  • WISBECH EAST - 1960 - The station was opened in March 1848 by the Eastern Counties Railway as Wisbeach, changed to Wisbech in May 1877, then again to Wisbech East in September 1948 to differentiate from the M&GN station on the other side of town. Here we see Claud Hamilton 4-4-0 No.62613 on a train for March in April 1960. 62613, a March (31B) engine, was withdrawn just 6 months later.

Seen here is Wisbech East from an arriving DMU in September 1968, the month it closed. There seems to be very little activity.
  • WISBECH EAST GOODS YARD - 1900's - The Eastern Counties Railway reached Wisbech with a line from March in May 1847. A wooden station named Wisbeach was opened on the opposite side of the tracks and further to the north of the engine shed shown here. East Anglian Railways arrived in Wisbech from Magdalen Road in 1848 and built a station on the site of Wisbech East, just off to the right of this plan, and also named Wisbeach. The short and extremely sharp curve shown here was put in to join the lines. In 1852, the ECR took over the EAR and that in turn was acquired by the GER in 1862. They promptly closed the ECR station to passengers but retained the goods and locomotive facilities. In August 1883, the first section of the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway. opened. New sidings and a brick engine shed were constructed for the trams that were to work the new route and a new station was built in 1887. A new brick engine shed was also provided, with a 42 ft turntable, in the goods yard, as seen here; initially it had only a single road but a second was added in 1893 to handle the station's growing agricultural traffic. This locoshed went out of use in the 1910's, from when the tramway engines were stabled opposite Wisbech station, with only the turntable remaining by 1925. Thus it is possible to date this plan at somewhere between 1893 and about 1910. As can easily be appreciated, the whole arrangement must have been very inconvenient for all concerned, especially for goods traffic arriving from the east and requiring to use the good yard.
  • WISBECH EAST GOODS YARD - 1981 - The GER passenger station at Wisbech was on such a cramped site that the goods yard had to be built about half a mile away to the north west. It was very large, with about 6 sidings and a loading dock and offices, seen here in September 1981, with vans from the petfood train in the background. The passenger station and the line to the east of Wisbech closed in 1968 but the line to March remained open until 2001. It had a siding into the Metal Box Factory and, in later years, was the destination of a daily goods from Paisley carrying petfood. It was the only goods train in Britain than ran both ways loaded. In the 1980's, the yard still handled a variety of products including coal. It only had a south-facing junction which must have made things very difficult for eastbound trains!
  • WISBECH EAST GOODS YARD - 1981 - The large goods yard located some distance from the East station, seen in July 1981 with the 'Fenbasher' rail tour arriving. On the right is the Redland ready-mix yard, the Metal Box factory behind the DMU. The petfood factory, main source of traffic, is behind the camera to the right. The size and complexity of the yard is quite evident from this picture.
