FENLAND CLASS 20

Included here are pictures all taken between Peterborough East Junction and Ely North Junction, all of the Queen Adelaide crossings included and the erstwhile Wisbech Branch. Some of the old 35mm slides from the '80's are a bit blurry but then those were the days of 65ASA film, 1/125th and Focus DIY. These are probably best looked at in large format. 20016 and 20072 pass Silt Road LC on a single wagon 6E20 Toton - Colchester Hythe Coal, 10/08/88. 20016 was withdrawn in April 1995 and 20072 in January 1992.

  • 20004 and 20021 pass Stonea Pits with a rake of wagons for scrapping at Mayer Newman at Snailwell, 29/03/88. 20004 was withdrawn in October 1990 and 20021 followed in March 1991.
  • 20007, in BR Green livery, passes Badgeney Road AHB on the rear of 0E20 Ely Papworths Sidings - Peterborough Orton Mere, 20142 in LUL livery next along, power provided by ROG 47813, 05/04/18. 20007 at least was running, maybe both of them. This train had come from Leicester earlier as 5E43 with some HST vehicles for storage and the Class 20's are bound for the NVR Diesel Gala this weekend.
  • 20016 and 20072 pass Silt Road LC on a single wagon 6E20 Toton - Colchester Hythe Coal, 10/08/88. 20016 was withdrawn in April 1995 and 20072 in January 1992.
  • 20019 and 20056 run into March Station with 8M06 Kings Lynn - Derby St Marys empty HTV's, 01/11/85. 20019 was withdrawn in November 1991.
  • 20021 and 20004 head east past Horsemoor with 6Y41 March - Kennett/Barham Redland stone, 31/03/88. The Up Redland split in March Up Yard, the larger portion going to Trowse with the train loco, the smaller to Kennett or Barham, as required, as 6Y41 with whatever March Depot could supply. The return empties also rejoined at March. Nothing in this picture remains today - both locos have been scrapped, the signals have gone, Horsemoor signalbox is in a garden in Murrow and even the willow tree fell down!.
  • 20023, recently ex-Works, and 20025, recently not ex-Works, sit in Hundred Road Sidings at March Depot, 07/85. 20023 was withdrawn in May 1991 and 20025 in the September.
  • 20030 in Green livery sits on Hundred Road Sidings at March Depot, 13/06/88.
  • 20030 in highly non-standard and very dirty green livery on March Depot, 04/06/88.
  • 20037 and 20160 pass through March Station on 8M06 Kings Lynn - Derby St Mary's, 24/12/85. 20037 was withdrawn in January 1987 and 20160 in December 1990.
  • 20054 and 20055 sit in Hundred Road Sidings at March Depot, 08/03/85. 20054 was withdrawn in September 1989 and 20055 in July 1993.
  • 20054 and 20139 are towing away 2 of March's stored Class 20's, 20164 and 20153 to Toton Depot for component recovery, passing Whitemoor Junction, 10/87. 20054 was withdrawn in September 1989 and 20139 in May 1991. 20164 was cut by Vic Berry in Leicester in July 1988 and 20153 at Berry's in March 1988.
  • 20054 heads out of Whitemoor on 9P89 for Norwich, 12/03/85. A single Class 20 on a freight was a real rarity in England. This loco was withdrawn in September 1989.
  • 20055 and 20054 draw out of Norwood Loop and over Norwood Road LC on an Up Ballast, 08/03/85. 20054 was withdrawn in September 1989 and 20055 in July 1993.
  • 20057 amd 20132 have come from Whitemoor to go on Depot, 18/08/87.
  • 20059, in very tatty Railfreight livery, and 20145 of Eastfield MPD sit in Hundred Road Sidings at March Depot, 12/06/88.
  • 20072 and 20016 pass Manea on 6M09 Colchester - Toton Coal Empties, 10/08/88. 20072 was withdrawn in January 1992 and 20016 in April 1995.
  • 20093 and 20054 pass Whitemoor Junction on 9B01 for Peterborough, 05/85. The brown and white vans behind the mixer are for UKF at Whittlesea and will be dropped off on the return journey. 20054 was withdrawn in September 1989 and 20093 in May 1991.
  • 20094 and 20080 run into March Station and head for Peterborough light engine, 15/07/85. 20094 was withdrawn in June 1993 and 20080 in July 1990.
  • 20094 and 20084 draw 6M09 Colchester Hythe - Toton Coal Empties from March Down Loop, 25/07/87. 20084 was the first loco to be modified with extra fuel tanks on the running board and extra cooling vents. It later became DRS No.20302 and the class standard for DRS locos. It is presently in store. 20094 was withdrawn in June 1993.
  • 20097 and 20185 approach March West Junction on 6M09 Colchester Hythe - Toton coal empties, 22/04/87. 20097 was withdrawn in September 1989 and 20185 in October 1992.
