FENLAND SECOND GENERATION DIESEL MULTIPLE UNITS

Included here are pictures taken of Second Generation DMU's, including those few DEMU's we've had long here, between Peterborough East Junction and Ely North Junction, all of the Queen Adelaide crossings included and the erstwhile Wisbech Branch. Some of the old 35mm slides from the '80's are a bit blurry but then those were the days of 65ASA film, 1/125th and Focus DIY. These are probably best looked at in large format. Class 170 101 slows to stop at March on 1L40 1222 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport, 08/02/22.

  • Class 158 799 passes March West Junction on an eastbound Norwich train, 05/05/07. These units had been cascaded from Northern, who were starting to receive Class 185's in their place. This was the first time that I'd seen this livery and, awful though it may have been, it was still intact but it became progressively vandalised in coming months.
  • Class 158 806 passes under the A141 Flyover on a Norwich train, 20/04/07.
  • Class 158 806/158846 pass Horsemoor on 1R58 1056 Norwich - Sheffield, 24/04/22. I don't know why they double up some trains at the weekends. Of course, the most interesting feature of this picture is the deer in the foreground which I completely failed to see!
  • Class 158 812 passes Australia Farm No.64 OC on a westbound train, 27/03/07. These units had been cascaded from Northern, who were starting to receive Class 185's in their place. This was the first time that I'd seen this livery and, awful though it may have been, it was still intact but it became progressively vandalised in coming months.
  • Class 158 812 passes Silt Road LC on 1R66 0856 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street, 09/08/21.
  • Class 158 847 of EMT approaches Queen Adelaide (Norwich) AHB with a Norwich - Liverpool train, 21/12/10 - note couplings protected from the weather.
  • Class 158 852 trails 156 410 past Badgeney Road AHB on 1R72 1144 Norwich - Sheffield, 22/02/22.
  • Class 158 858 passes Whittlesea on 1R72 1156 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street, 06/08/21.
  • Class 158 862 passes Whittlesea on 1L09 0951 Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich, 12/08/21.
  • Class 158 864 led by 158 812 passes Whitemoor Drove AHB on 1L07 1045 Sheffield - Norwich, 09/01/22. I don't why they are running as 4-cars - Covid regulations or staff shortages?
  • Class 158 865 passes Horsemoor on a Norwich train still wearing it's Alpha Line livery, 15/07/08.
  • Class 158 866 draws into March Station on 1R64 0755 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street, my transport as far as Peterborough, 13/07/21.
  • Class 158 954 passes Baileys No.71 OC bound for Peterborough, 17/10/03. These 3-car units are usually broken up after the summer. This one consists of 158786 and 52793.
  • Class 158 955 approaches March on Stansted - Birmingham New Street train, 15/07/03. During the summer months, 6 Class 158's were strengthened to 3-cars to cope with extra traffic to Stansted Airport.
  • Class 170 101 departs March for Stansted Airport in bastardised Central/MML livery, 26/03/05.
  • Class 170 101 slows to stop at March on 1L40 1222 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport, 08/02/22.
  • Class 170 104 slows for its March Station stop on 1N59 1427 Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street, 05/07/21.
  • Class 170 105 - curves away from March on a Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street serivice, 26/07/05.
  • Class 170 106 passes Silt Road LC on 1N51 1027 Stansted Airport - Birmingham New Street, 23/07/21.
  • Class 170 106 passes Whitemoor Drove 20 late on 1L48 Birmingham New Street - Stansted Airport, 05/07/22. 66765/766 on 1Z80 Ipswich - Peterborough approach in the distance.
