FENLAND SECOND GENERATION DIESEL MULTIPLE UNITS

Included here are pictures taken of Second Generation DMU's, including those few DEMU's we've had long here, between Peterborough East Junction and Ely North Junction, all of the Queen Adelaide crossings included and the erstwhile Wisbech Branch. Some of the old 35mm slides from the '80's are a bit blurry but then those were the days of 65ASA film, 1/125th and Focus DIY. These are probably best looked at in large format. Class 156 406 leaves March on a Birmingham New Street - Norwich train, 07/05/88 - the Shape of Things to Come!

  • Class 156 402, no longer wearing GA branding, passes Badgeney Road AHB on 2L77 1350 Peterborough - Ipswich, 23/12/19. Although all the GA Class 156's are off-lease, in extremis GA has been forced to retain some to operated at least some semblance of a service on this route.
  • Class 156 403 passes Whittlesea on 1L09 0951 Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich, 09/08/21. We seem to be getting more Class 156's on these trains now whilst Class 158 seems to monopolize The Lincolnshire Loop services.
  • Class 156 404 passes Silt Road LC on 1R58 0955 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street, 10/08/21. Yet another Class 156 vice a Class 158.
  • Class 156 405 passes Stonea Pits on an Up Passenger, 26/02/88 - the Shape of Things to Come!
  • Class 156 406 leads 158 780 past Whitemoor Drove AHB on 1R58 1056 Norwich - Liverpool, 09/01/22. I don't why they are running as 4-cars - Covid regulations or staff shortages?
  • Class 156 406 leaves March on a Birmingham New Street - Norwich train, 07/05/88 - the Shape of Things to Come!
  • Class 156 407 leads 156 411 and 156 427 on a Down Passenger approaching Silt Road LC, 10/08/88. My guess would be that only the first unit is actually in use. This would be the only 6-car Sprinter I've seen I think.
  • Class 156 408 heads west on Norwich - Birmingham service at March, 18/06/99.
  • Class 156 408 passes Whittlesea on 1L07 0742 Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich, 12/08/21.
  • Class 156 408, standing in for a Class 158, approaches Welney Road AHB on 1R90 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street, 29/08/18.
  • Class 156 409, usually employed on Norwich area local services, passes Badgeney Road AHB as 5Z15 Norwich Crown Point - Doncaster West Yard, 26/11/16.
  • Class 156 409, with Wherry Lines decals, makes an unusual sight on 2E74 Colchester - Peterborough at Horsemoor, 17/03/19.
  • Class 156 410 deputises for a Class 158 on 1L09 Liverpool - Norwich passing Horesmoor, 01/10/14.
  • Class 156 410 follows 158 857 through Whittlesea on a Stansted Airport service, 15/11/05.
  • Class 156 411 heads this 8-car Sprinter formation composed of 150 217, 156 438 and 156 440 past Silt Road LC, 09/88.
  • Class 156 411 heads towards Manea Station at Welney Road AHB on 1R86 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street, 24/05/14.
  • Class 156 411 passes Badgeney Road AHB on 1R66 Norwich - Liverpool Lime Street, 02/07/14.
  • Class 156 411 passes Manea on 1L11 1151 Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich, deputising for a Class 158, 08/06/21.
  • Class 156 412 approaches Silt Road LC as 5Z60 Norwich - Wolverton Works, 19/05/14.
  • Class 156 412 passes Silt Road LC as 5Z60 Norwich - Wolverton Works, 19/05/14.
