FENLAND SECOND GENERATION DIESEL MULTIPLE UNITS

Included here are pictures taken of Second Generation DMU's, including those few DEMU's we've had long here, between Peterborough East Junction and Ely North Junction, all of the Queen Adelaide crossings included and the erstwhile Wisbech Branch. Some of the old 35mm slides from the '80's are a bit blurry but then those were the days of 65ASA film, 1/125th and Focus DIY. These are probably best looked at in large format. These pictures are published for pleasure/information/research purposes only and are not for sale or copy under any circumstances. Class 156 402, fast becoming a permanent fixture in this area, approaches Welney Road AHB on 2E76 1201 Ipswich - Peterborough, 04/01/20.

  • Class 153 317 heads 5L41 Heaton TMD - Ely Papworth's Sidings past Whitemoor Drove with sisters 153 304, 153 315 and 153 378 trailing, 07/06/21. As far as I am aware, these are the first Northern Trains units to go into store at Ely.
  • Class 153 319 trails EMR sisters 153 308, 155 355 and 153 357 past Whitemoor Drove AHB on 5E46 Etches Park - Ely North Junction, bound for storage, 21/12/21. These are among the last of EMR's formerly quite large fleet.
  • Class 153 322 passes Three Horseshoes on the 1310 Peterborough - Ipswich, 24/12/02. This was the first Anglia-liveried Class 153 I'd seen.
  • Class 153 328 brings up the rear following sisters 153 307 and 153 331 on a Newton Heath - Ely North Junction working, bound for storage at Papworth's, 17/12/21.
  • Class 153 331 leads sisters 153 307 and 153 328 on a Newton Heath - Ely North Junction working, bound for storage at Papworth's, 17/12/21.
  • Class 153 352 trails sisters 153 351 and 153 301 through Manea on 5L41 Heaton TMD - Ely Papworths Sidings for storage, 08/06/21. Apparently, these are last of the Northern Trains units.

  • Class 153 374 in debranded EMT livery approaches Badgeney Rd AHB on 5E46 Cardiff Canton - Ely North Junction working, bound for store at Papworth's, 15/02/21. The unit, which had been in store at Papworth's since last July, had been on loan to TfW.

  • Class 155 304 pass March East Box in the rain, 10/87. These units were soon split to form Class 153 as they showed an alarming tendency to derail at their inner ends. This was the only one I ever saw at March.
  • Class 156 401 passes Whittlesea on 1L09 0951 Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich, 06/08/21.
  • Class 156 402 forms 2L77 1350 Peterborough - Ipswich passing Horsemoor, 02/01/20. This was only the second Peterborough - Ipswich service of the day.
  • Class 156 402 passes Badgeney Road AHB on a Norwich Crown Point - Doncaster West Yard ECS working, 08/07/17.
  • Class 156 402 slows to stop at Whittlesea on 2L75 1150 Peterborough - Ipswich, 29/05/19.
