ADELAIDE LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT, Belfast - the main GNR(I) steam depot seen, I think, in the early 1950's.

  • ADELAIDE LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT, Belfast - the main GNR(I) steam depot seen, I think, in the early 1950's.
  • AMIENS STREET LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT, Dublin - The small GNR(I) depot in Dublin, still in use today. The 0-6-0 may be a member of Class SG and the railcar tucked away on the left is one of the two Class C built for Dublin - Howth services.
  • ANTRIM STATION - opened in April 1848, closed to goods traffic in January 1965, the station still serves trains on the Belfast - Londonderry line - seen here in about 1910.
  • ATHBOY STATION - terminus of the short M&GWR branch from Kilmessan Junction on the Kingscourt line. The station was opened in 1864 and closed to passengers in 1947 and to freight in 1954, when the whole branch closed - seen here 04/36 with 0-6-0T No.561 shunting in the yard.
  • ATHENRY STATION - Opened in 1851, the station is a major junction on the Galway - Dublin line. From here a line goes south to Limerick via Ennis. Seen here in 1955, looking towards Galway.
  • BAGENALSTOWN STATION - on the Dublin - Waterford line, opened in 1850.
  • BALLINROBE STATION - County Mayo, terminus of a branch from Claremorris. Opened in November 1892, it closed to passengers in June 1930 and to freight services in January 1960. Seen here in 1955 looking west, when it appears there must still have been some sort of passenger traffic - a special perhaps.
  • BALLYMONEY - Opened in December 1855 by the Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine and Portrush Junction Railway on the Belfast - Londonderry line, Ballymoney also became the termnus of the 3 foot gauge Ballycastle Railway in October 1880. The station was extensively rebuilt in 1901, closed to goods traffic in January 1965 and remains open for passenger traffic today. The Ballycastle Railway closed in 1924 but was taken over by the Northern Counties Committee and finally closed in July 1950. Here we see a train in the Ballycastle bay platform headed by a Class Q 0-6-0T.
  • BELFAST - ADELAIDE FREIGHT YARD - This is the main freight terminal in Northern Ireland, October 23rd, 2002.
  • BELFAST GREAT VICTORIA STREET - the first station in Belfast, opened by the Ulster Railway in 1839, simply known as 'Belfast'. In 1852, it was renamed 'Belfast Victoria Street' to differentiate from the two other termini in Belfast and the  name changed again in 1856 to 'Great Victoria Street' when the Belfast - Dublin mainline was completed to the station. Closed by NIR in 1976 and replaced by the less central Belfast Central, a new station opened on the site in 1995 and Great Victoria Street was born again - seen here on July 19th, 1956.
  • BELFAST QUEEN'S QUAY MPD - The main Motive Power Depot and Works of the B&CDR was here. In this undated picture, but probably from the 1930's, from the right, No.15, No.13 and No.8, all 4-4-2T's, plus one that I can't identify.
  • BELFAST YORK ROAD - opened in 1848, York Road was the Londonderry terminus. A wonderful, Neo-Gothic construction, it was badly damaged by an air raid in April 1941 and further damaged by terrorist bombs in 1968, after which the old terminus was demolished and replaced a modern brick building in 1975. Never busy in the modern era, it slipped into obscurity as terminus of the Larne line until in 1992 it was linked to Belfast Central by the Dargan bridge, renamed Yorkgate and became a through station and its fortunes were completely revived - seen here on July 31st, 1956.
  • BELTURBET STATION - County Cavan, just 4km from the border with Ulster. Opened in 1885 by the GNR (I) on the branch to Ballyhaise from the Cavan - Clones line. It closed for all services in April 1959. Probably seen here after closure.
  • BLARNEY STATION - located on the line from Cork to Mallow, opened in 1850 and completely closed in 1963. A nerw station is currently under construction in the old goods yard with the proposed re-introduction of the Cork - Mallow suburban services.

  • BRAY MOTIVE POWER DEPOT - Bray was at the outer limit of Dublin suburban services and the depot there has quite a roster of small tank engines - an ex DSER Class 258 2-4-2T stands in front of a very old 4-4-0, while a 4-4-2T is seen on the right, 09/49 - note odd signal.
  • BROADSTONE ENGINE SHED - a selection of locos gathered around the turntable in the roofless shed in 1955.
  • BROADSTONE ENGINE SHED - the through shed in 1955.
  • CAHIRCIVEEN STATION - looking north, on the Farranfore - Valentia Harbour branch. The station was opened in September 1893 and closed in February 1960. The steel viaduct on the left is still in situ. Note the engine shunting on the right whilst the stock of the mixed train sits in the platform - seen here in September 1938.
  • CLONAKILTY JUNCTION - On the old CBSCR, Clonalikty Junction was where the branch to Clonakilty left the Bantry to Cork main line. AEC railcar 2627/2642 has arrived on the 1500 Bantry - Cork whilst Class C No.C227 waits in the platform on the Clonakilty mixed train in March 1961., just one month before closure.
