LOCOMOTIVES OF THE MIDLAND & GREAT NORTHERN JOINT RAILWAY
Included here are pictures of the old Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway. The company only had a life of about 40 years but interesting years they were. It was formed in 1893 from a number of smaller companies bought by the Midland and Great Northern Railways in an attempt to break the GER stranglehold on the increasingly lucrative East Coast holiday trade. Of all the major railway companies, the Midland was the only one that was virtually landlocked, a cause of great annoyance. Locomotive stock was eclectic to say the least initially but later settled down into four basic classes that served the railway well until taken over by the LNER in 1936. These pictures cover all eras, areas and aspects of the company's existence. These pictures are published for pleasure/information/research purposes only and are not for sale or copy under any circumstances. Information in captions has been researched as thoroughly as possible but its accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Below is a copy of the 1922 timetable for Bourne, which is surprisingly comprehensive, trains covering most of the M&GN system:-
