MIDLAND & GREAT NORTHERN JOINT RAILWAY TICKETS & OTHER PAPER EPHEMERA

I have decided, either rightly or wrongly, to move all my tickets and other paper artifacts into a separate gallery for those who are interested in that sort thing, thus sparing the feelings of frustration of those more interested in railway architecture and trackside furniture.
A few thoughts on the tickets - at the bottom centre of some is a four digit number, 2554 in the case of Hillington. This an LNER station identification code, denoting the point of origin but not the destination. On the M&GN, the stations were numbered alphabetically, starting with Attlebridge, 2530, and ending with Yarmouth Beach, 2594. This would suggest that tickets with these number are post-1923 whereas those without would predate that. The destination is printed under this number or left blank to be handwritten. I presume that these outward portions were returned to the station of origin or to regional headquarters for accounting purposes and the code numbers enabled staff to sort them more quickly and accurately. I might add that this is all purely guesswork as I have been unable to find any evidence to support this idea.

BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - CHEAP DAY TICKETS BETWEEN YARMOUTH, NORTH WALSHAM AND FAKENHAM (1) - Handbill advertising Cheap Day Return tickets from stations between Fakenham and Yarmouth Beach, any train, any day, from January 1958. I suspect this amened handbill reflected a fare rise.

  • A map of junctions in the Yarmouth and Lowestoft area. Being the last player in the game, the M&GN was obliged to fit it's stations in wherever it could.
  • A map of M&GN junctions on the western end of the system in the 1930's. Looking at Spalding today, it's hard to believe what a large railway centre it was just a few years ago. Kings Lynn is a real mare's nest! There must have been more levels crossings there than in the whole of the rest of Norfolk!
  • A map of the M&GNJR published in 1900, showing the branch from Mundesley to Happisburgh that was never built and nothing west of Spalding or Eye Green! The raison d'etre for the M&GN is clear from this map. Protected by the sea on three sides, the GER had a monopoly on traffic to the east coast ports and defended it fiercely. Thus, the only route in for an interloper would be a circuitous one via an undefended back door - and thus was born the M&GNJR! By linking up a network of financially ailing small companies that the GER couldn't be bothered with and building a few miles of new track in the west, a spear was thrust deep into the side of the GER.
  • A map of the railways in the Cromer area. The M&GN pulled off a real coup with Cromer Beach Station, located right on the seafront, whilst the GER station, Cromer High, was well inland and on the top of a big hill.
  • An M&GNJR System Diagram showing the extensive and meandering, mainly single track, empire at fullest extent.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL (1) - CHEAP DAY TICKETS BY ANY TRAIN - Handbill advertising cheap day returns by any train over the M&GN system dated January 1958.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL (2) - CHEAP DAY TICKETS BY ANY TRAIN - Handbill advertising cheap day returns by any train over the M&GN system dated January 1958.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - Advertising an excursion from Kings Lynn to Great Yarmouth on August 10th, 1958 with a connection to the Cromer line.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - Advertising an excursion from Kings Lynn to Yarmouth Beach on August 4th, 1958. One outward service but two return trains it would seem.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - Advertising Cheap Day Return Tickets from Norwich City to stations on the lines to Kings Lynn and Cromer.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - Advertising Holiday Runabout Tickets in Areas No.9 and No.10, taking in, between them, most of the M&GN system. I presume that these were weekly tickets and, in my opinion, not much of a bargain!
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - CHEAP DAY TICKETS BETWEEN YARMOUTH, NORTH WALSHAM AND FAKENHAM (1) - Handbill advertising Cheap Day Return tickets from stations between Fakenham and Yarmouth Beach, any train, any day, from January 1958. I suspect this amened handbill reflected a fare rise.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - CHEAP DAY TICKETS BETWEEN YARMOUTH, NORTH WALSHAM AND FAKENHAM (2) - Handbill advertising Cheap Day Return tickets from stations between Fakenham and Yarmouth Beach, any train, any day, from January 1958. I suspect this amened handbill reflected a fare rise.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - CHEAP DAY TICKETS BETWEEN YARMOUTH AND NORTH WALSHAM (1) - Handbill advertising Cheap Day Return tickets from stations between North Walsham and Yarmouth Beach, any train, any day, from June 9th and September 13th, 1958.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - CHEAP DAY TICKETS BETWEEN YARMOUTH AND NORTH WALSHAM (2) - Handbill advertising Cheap Day Return tickets from stations between North Walsham and Yarmouth Beach, any train, any day, from June 9th and September 13th, 1958. Considering that this was the M&GN's last summer of full services, the timetable is still pretty comprehensive.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - CHEAP SINGLE TICKETS BETWEEN YARMOUTH AND POTTER HEIGHAM - Handbill advertising Cheap Single tickets from stations between Potter Heigham and Yarmouth Beach, any train, any day, from January 1958. I suspect that this notice reflected a rise in fares.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - DAY EXCURSIONS TO NOTTINGHAM - Handbill advertising excursions to Nottingham on Friday and Saturday from September 17th, 1958, from stations between Spalding and Edmondthorpe & Wymondham to Nortingham Midland (one train there but two back!)
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS HANDBILL - EXCURSION TO YARMOUTH - On Saturday, August 15th, 1950, an Excursion was to be run from, of all places, Grimston Road to Yarmouth Beach, with connections at Melton Constable to/from Cromer. All tickets to be purchased in advance, to allow the right number of carriages to be provided. It was a very circuitous way to reach Yarmouth from Cromer! And how come a return from Cromer Beach was 4s 9d when it was 6s 0d from Holt and 5s 9d from Melton Constable? Sorry it's all a bit squidgy but I couldn't make it fir on my scanner properly.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS LETTER - SHERINGHAM - Reply to an enquiry from Mr Medcalf requesting platform tickets.
  • BRITISH RAILWAYS TICKET - BOURNE - Third Class Child Single to Twenty, fare 4d - dated October 20th, 1956. I am told by a lifelong Bourne resident that women who did casual labour on the farms all went by train to Twenty - perhaps this child was on half-term and had to accompany their mother to work.
