OPEN DAY - NORTHWICH DIESEL DEPOT, 1980 - Northwich was not a depot in it's own right on Sunday, May 18th, 1980, but an out-station for Wigan Springs Branch. It still occupied the old steam shed (8E) and was very busy, usually playing host to numerous Class 40's and Class 25's. I am still trying to track this event down but this much I do know. The celebrations for the 150th Anniversary of the Rainhill Trials were held a week later. The exhibits were collected at Wigan Springs Branch and some at least of the participants were housed at Northwich, including 4 steam locos which later formed part of the celebrations. They were Class A4 4498 SIR NIGEL GRESLEY, Merchant Navy Class 35028 CLAN LINE, 'Lord Nelson' Class 30850 LORD NELSON and Class 5MT 5000, the first two of which ran a shuttle service from the station to the depot for this Open Day. The depot closed in 1984.
