SLOVAKIAN STEAM GRAND PRIX, September 9th, 2006.
I had read of the Eastern European Steam Grand Prix and so, in 2006, decided to venture Slovakia to attend this event. I knew very little about it but the date and venue but, being an intrepid sort of a cove, set off full odf expectation. Zvolen Depot Open Day was planned to coincide with the Grand Prix, which took place at the adjacent Zvolen Nakladna Stanica, and a totally unfettered and unrestricted tour of the depot was allowed in addition to admission to a whole array of engines on exhibition. In the afternoon, a whole series of events took place at the station, through the middle of which operated the normal service trains! There were also a number of specials arriving and departing. Totally organised chaos! In addition, there was a display of WW1 dogfighting by a group of replica WW1 fighter aircraft overhead, a fabulous day out and completely free! I can honestly sat that I spent not one penny except for buying an ice cream.
