OCEAN TYPE SHIPS
Sixty 'Ocean' type freighters were built in 1942 in American shipyards, 30 by the Todd-Bath Ironworks of Portland, Maine, and 30 by the Permanente Metals Corpn., of Richmond, California. They were flush-decked for ease of construction and used the revolutionary welding process on their hulls. They were coal-fired, again for ease of construction, and of standard British freighter layout with hold no.3 between the bridge and funnel. This design would later be developed into the 'Liberty' ship and the 'Fort' and 'Park' ships built in Canada.
